Inheritance

I inherited a car — how do I proceed with disposal?

An inherited vehicle can be complicated: documents may be incomplete, title may not yet be transferred, but owner duties can still continue. Here is a practical path.

First: legal authority to act

To lawfully hand over the vehicle to a scrapyard, you must be entitled to dispose of the estate—usually the car must be in your name or you must act on behalf of the heirs.

Options:

  • Final certificate of inheritance from a notary after probate — standard proof of your right to deal with the assets
  • Power of attorney from other heirs if there are multiple heirs and you act for them

Without one of these, a scrapyard cannot take the vehicle — not for bureaucracy, but because taking a car from an unauthorised person would be void.

Missing vehicle documents?

Lost registration documents can be reissued at the traffic authority. We recommend sorting this before handover; without documents the process cannot be properly documented.

If you are unsure where to start, contact us for guidance.

Poor condition

Inherited cars are often stored long term. That can mean a flat battery, flat tyres, seized brakes — non-running.

We offer free towing in Bratislava and surroundings for non-running vehicles. If major parts are missing, the car may be classed as incomplete and a €50 fee applies.

Step by step

  • Obtain the inheritance certificate or powers of attorney
  • Check you have the registration documents; if not, order duplicates
  • Contact us to arrange handover
  • You receive a takeover certificate at handover

Summary

An inherited car is solvable. With the right inheritance documents the process is like a normal handover. Contact us in advance for non-standard cases.
