What is the takeover certificate and what happens next?

The certificate of takeover of an old vehicle is issued when you hand the car to an authorised scrapyard. Without it you typically cannot complete deregistration.

What is it?

It is the statutory document issued by an authorised treatment facility when taking over a vehicle for environmentally sound disposal.

It usually lists:

  • vehicle identification (plate, VIN, type)
  • handing-over party
  • scrapyard / facility
  • takeover date

Why you need it

It is the basis for removing the vehicle from the register at the traffic authority. Without it deregistration is usually refused.

After handover

  1. Visit the traffic authority responsible for the vehicle’s registration
  2. Submit the takeover certificate with your ID
  3. The authority removes the vehicle from the register — from then on owner duties linked to that vehicle end

Deregistration itself is typically free of charge.

How quickly?

Law may not set a strict deadline after scrapyard handover, but we recommend acting soon — until deregistered the vehicle can still appear on record in your name.

Number plates?

Hand in plates at deregistration if required locally. If plates are lost or stolen, report it — replaceable.

Summary

The certificate proves we took over the vehicle. Take it to the authority and complete deregistration. Afterwards you have no further duties for that vehicle.
